Highlands North Boys High School (“Highlands North”) situated in Johannesburg, Gauteng is a state-owned public senior school for 800 boys and has a total staff complement of 35.
The High School was founded in 1939 initially for the residents in the Highlands North area and now caters for learners from all over Gauteng. Due to its location, the learners are not exempt from paying school fees, however only a small percentage of learners can afford to pay for their schooling. Most parents work as street vendors, household cleaners or are positioned as shelf packers and checkout operators at local supermarkets, earning less than R6, 000 per month. Highlands North is a Quantile 5 school, servicing learners from vulnerable backgrounds.
Extra murals at the High School include rugby, soccer and cricket, as well as various cultural activities such as chess, choir, band and public speaking.
The High School runs a food programme for its 100 Grade 12 learners, who attend extra classes on Saturdays (January to October) and during the school holidays (March, June/July and September/October). Meals are prepared on site and for many, this is the only food they get for the day. Staff at the High School have identified that most of the learners are hungry and its difficult for them to concentrate on an empty stomach.
There is a fully functional and involved School Governing Body at Highlands North who see to the day-to-day running of the school. Together with support from the High School’s Old Boys, maintenance and other needs that arise from time to time, are seen to.
RADA was introduced to Highlands North in July 2023 and decided that it was a place we could assist and support going forward. With the help of sponsors, we are now providing food to the High School for their feeding programme supporting the vulnerable children. RADA will continue to assess and assist with the needs of the High School, its staff and its learners.
