Parktown Boys High School situated in Johannesburg, Gauteng is seen by many as a private school, however it is a public senior state school, receiving partial funding from government for its 856 learners and 57 members of staff. The rest of the running fees come from school fees paid by parents, overseen by the Schools Governing Body (SGBs) and outside funding.
The Parktonian Foundation Trust (“the Foundation”) has been in existence since 1978. The Foundation relaunched its purpose in October 2022 to raise funds to augment what is raised by the School Governing Body and sourced from state budgets. The Foundation is made up of seven members and aims to preserve the legacy of the school by offering support through fundraising and various social events. The Foundation, which is a registered non-profit company, has seen the development of the new boarding house and continues to focus on the well-being of the school, by promoting the values and developing young men who espouse the qualities of empathy, care and compassion for the person next to them – a positive meaningful sense of camaraderie.
The Foundation is currently overseeing and seeking support for various learners. There are 12 boys from vulnerable homes, who prefer to stay in the school’s hostel during their holiday break because there is no food at home. Furthermore, teachers are supporting 15 day-learners who come to school hungry every day. Many of the learners come from vulnerable areas around Gauteng, namely Orange Farm, Alexandra and Diepsloot.
RADA was introduced to The Foundation in July 2023 and decided that it could assist and support them going forward. With the help of sponsors, we are now providing food to the school for their learners. RADA will continue to assess and assist with the needs of the school through the Foundation.
