Philena Primary School is located in Olievenhoutbosch, close to Centurion in Gauteng. The school serves 1,914 students, supported by a dedicated team of fifty-four educators and twelve additional staff members, including gardeners, cooks and security personnel. Philena Primary is at the heart of a vibrant, bustling vulnerable community of over two million people.
The school was established in 1953 to cater to the children of farm workers residing in the area. After the property was sold to Philip and Elina Koekemoer, the couple built three additional classrooms and renamed the school “Philena,” a combination of their names.
Philena Primary is classed as a no-fee school and funding is received from the government, which covers basic expenses such as maintenance and utilities. The school faces many challenges, particularly around infrastructure and learning materials, relying heavily on external support to meet its needs.
The primary school operates from 45 prefabricated classrooms, a library and two kitchens. It hosts a variety of programs aimed at supporting both academic and personal development, including sports and recreation, gardening and extramural activities.
The introduction of a feeding scheme has had a significant impact on the school, ensuring that 1,915 children, including 400 vulnerable children, receive daily nutritious meals. The initiative has not only improved attendance rates but has also fostered better academic performance and increased participation in extramural activities.
Philena Primary School has an active School Governing Body (SGB) that ensures the school adheres to government policies and guidelines.
RADA was introduced to Philena Primary School in September 2024 and recognized it as a place where we could provide meaningful support. With the help of sponsors, we are now contributing to the school’s feeding program, ensuring that vulnerable children receive the nutrition they need. RADA will continue to assess and assist with the needs of Philena Primary, its staff, students, and the broader community.
