Protea South Community Project

The Protea South Community Project, based in Protea South, Soweto is a registered non-profit that was started in 2002 by Mohammed and Hassan.   It was established due to many families living in the area being unemployed and not receiving government assistance, the children were consequently malnourished and hungry.  The desperate need for food led to starting the community feeding project.

The project initially started on a central plot of land in a building that had been abandoned by the local community clinic.  The founders of the project approached the City of Johannesburg with their proposal to use the existing prefabricated buildings for the community centre, which was subsequently approved by the City.  The property has since developed, with three brick buildings having been added which are used as classrooms for the children.

The after-school centre, run by nine staff members including a cook, provides the children with homework support and food every afternoon.  There are eight classrooms with approximately forty children in each class, split according to age groups which vary from seven to seventeen years.  Vital life skills training as well as a sporting programme is also run from the centre.

The feeding programme is committed to distributing food to 437 children daily, while surplus food is shared with the elderly and people with disabilities.

RADA was introduced to the project in June 2023 and after visiting the premises and meeting the staff, RADA decided that it was a place we could assist and support going forward.  With the help of sponsors, we will continue to assess and assist with the needs of the centre and the community it serves.
