Thushanang Primary School situated in the small rural village of Machipe, Mpumalanga, is a public primary school for 309 learners and has a staff compliment of 28.
There was a need in the area to provide education to Pedi speaking children, which lead to the establishment of the school in 1975. Community members contributed towards building the school which has been registered as a Section 21 facility. Learners are exempt from paying school fees due to the school’s rural location and the majority of the community are unemployed and unable pay fees.
Extra mural activities include soccer, netball and indigenous games.
The learners are reliant on the school’s daily feeding scheme and for many, this is the only food they eat for the day.
Thushanang Primary shares its premises with the local community, the school’s facilities are used for gatherings which include village meetings and funerals.
There is an active school governing body consisting of nine members and a good relationship is maintained with the district school board.
RADA was introduced to Thushanang Primary School in February 2023 and decided that it was a place that we could assist and support going forward. With the help of sponsors, we are now providing food to the school for their feeding programme supporting the vulnerable children at the school. RADA will continue to assess and assist with the needs of the school, its staff, the children and the community.
