Little Angels Day Care Centre situated in the Johannesburg CBD is ‘a place where children get their wings’.
The NPO was started in 2019 by 22-year-old Noma Malunga, who saw a desperate need amongst young parents and single mothers living in the city who face the daily stress of finding a safe environment in which to leave their children while they looked for employment or went to work. The day care which started with only five children, operating from a one-bedroom flat is now situated in a much larger space close to Doornfontein with forty children currently enrolled.
Little Angels caters for children who are SASSA (Grant) beneficiaries and whose parents are low income earners. Their belief is that all children should be given the best possible start when it comes to their development and education regardless of the economic situation of their parents. They provide an environment where each child’s growth and potential are nurtured in a safe and secure space.
The day care consists of 3 classes, accommodating children aged between 1 and 5 years and has a staff compliment of 3 teachers and a manager. The respective classes comprise of Grade R, Grade RR and a class for the 1-3-year-olds.
Little Angels aims to guide and educate the 40 learners in all areas of development in preparation for formal schooling. Each child is offered activities suitable to their stage of development and learning style. The staff make every effort to get know the little ones and their families to create a loving and happy relationship, which is important for a productive morning at playschool and nurturing a happy and confident child.
Utilities, rent, staff salaries and food for the children are some of the daily challenges they face. RADA was introduced to the day care centre in May 2021 and decided that it was a place we could assist and support going forward. With the help of sponsors, we are now providing food to the school on a monthly basis and will continue to assess and assist with the needs of the school, it’s teachers and learners.
